The Sutton Group Consulting, Geotechnical and Foundation Engineers

John SuttonJohn Sutton

John Sutton, PE/GE, D.GE founded The Sutton Group in March 1993 as a geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering firm. His initial clients were a small city, and a Fortune 500 company that asked him to continue the geo-environmental services he had been providing when employed with a local consulting firm that was bought out by a national player. As well as the stock-in-trade design and construction recommendations for a variety of buildings, facilities, and custom residences, we have conceived and developed remedial designs for specific foundation problems, such as an apartment building being undermined by advancing creek bank erosion; a landslide only partially repaired which continued to move, heaving the street below, and wracking our client’s house; and foundation buttressing for several houses located near the ever-moving Hayward Fault. John also provides senior-level technical support to engineering, and testing firms, heavy construction firms, and to other geo-firms.

Learn More about John

John has more than 35 years of geotechnical engineering, civil engineering and construction experience. From graduate school, he was hired by Woodward Clyde’s Denver office where he was mentored by the late H.J. Gibbs, W.G. Holtz and F.J. Holliday on geotechnical aspects of the power, mining and manufacturing industry projects, particularly in tailing piles and dams, and waste storage ponds to which he was assigned. He was a project engineer/superintendent for Meredith Drilling Company, installing large diameter drilled pier foundations and shoring, for power plants and commercial and industrial buildings; a Lead Geotechnical Engineer with Stone & Webster on coal-fired and hydroelectric power projects. He was responsible for geotechnical related design and construction of major engineered fills, foundations and waste impoundments, with final planned embankments to 600 feet height. These were across the Mountain West, the Midwest, Florida and Texas, as well as in California.

A California resident since 1986, John spent several years in environmental cleanup, including several superfund and DOD RIFS projects before returning to focus on geotechnical projects. Besides commercial buildings and governmental projects, John has been geotechnical engineer-of-record (GEOR) on more than 40 California DSA-reviewed school projects, and on OSHPD-reviewed hospital construction, including seismic upgrades, one with $220MM project cost. He also enjoys, and makes time to work on custom residences and distressed properties. He has investigated and/or prepared remedial foundation and slope designs in soil and rock for restoration of slopes and landslides, and stabilizing the foundations of numerous single-family houses in the Bay Area.

John has extensive hands-on experience in deep foundation design and construction, major and minor earthwork, soil stabilization and ground improvement, expansive soils, collapsible soils, landslide drainage and slope repair, rock slope repair and artificial turf sports fields. He has designed several creek bank stabilization projects, segmental block retaining walls, geogrid-reinforced soil, and foundation underpinning and shoring systems. He has overseen the installation of over 1,000 tiebacks, seismic tiedowns, micropiles, soil nails and rock bolts.

John has provided geotechnical consultations, remedial design, failure analysis, and expert witness services on a variety of projects, including the Sacramento River levee upgrade program. John is licensed in California as a Civil and a Geotechnical Engineer. He has relinquished his licenses in Alaska, Colorado, Minnesota and Nevada. John is a Diplomate of the Academy of GeoProfessionals.
